Acai bowls for the nervous!

You say tom-AY-to, I say tom-AA-to…..let’s call the whole thing off!!!!!!! Right no need for such rashness here folks. Lets just all calm down.

I do have to admit that the words of this song were ringing through my head a few months back when several friends and I arrived bleary eyed into a really hip and trendy (think smashed avocado’s, sourdough bread and all sorts of green juices) Edinburgh café. We just really wanted the delicious looking purple concoction in the bowl, decorated daintily and with precision with all sorts of natures finest treats. 

Who was going to go first? We needed a solider to stand up and take the lead. A hit for the team. Like how in the hell do you actually pronounce Acaí? 

It took a West Cork man – we waited…..baited breath…… willing him to say whatever it was with conviction and determination. Here was a 50 chin ups with 1 hand, senior footballer, “I’ve got this” kinda guy.

“I’ll have a flat white, the poached eggs with avocado and the……..ahhhh…..*cough……ACK-AA  bowl…wooof….cough….splutter”

The rest of the tables eye’s rose to meet the server. All of us in silence….waiting for the verdict… school children watching the inspector at the top of the class on our very best behaviour.

Her reply was swift and friendly:

Och hen, ‘at a body got ye didne it?” 

At this stage there was utter panic internally. 

“Ye pronoonce it ASS-EYE-EE. Ass – loch th’ donkey.”

And that is why I will never ever forget how to pronounce Acaí. It may be a Portuguese word. It may be acceptable to say ASS-EYE or ASS-EYE-EE in English but there is no escaping that its worth mastering. It is more than a really thick smoothie you eat with a spoon. It looks and tastes a bit like ice-cream. The fun lies in the toppings.

This, my friends, is a breakfast that makes you feel good about yourself.  

Here is a really simple cooling and filling Acaí bowl recipe for the whole family. 



Serves 2

200g frozen strawberries

50g frozen blueberries

2 frozen sliced bananas

4 tablespoons acaí powder

200 ml unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice), plus more as needed

2 tablespoons nut or seed butter (I used almond or cashew)

1/2 to 1 tablespoon agave.honey or maple syrup, to taste – this is optional

Toppings ideas:

Granola, blueberries, raspberries, sliced banana, sliced strawberries, sliced kiwi,  Cacao nibs, Almond flakes, Chopped Nuts, flaxseed, goji berries.


Add all the ingredients to a high powered blender and blend. Add more milk if needed to get it moving in the blender. You are looking for a Mr Whippy/frozen Yoghurt consistency. 

Transfer the creamy mixture into 2 bowl and top with topping of your choice.

What to do with leftovers? Not from the half eaten bowl but if you just have too much in the blender at any given time??

I just freeze them in my lollipop moulds and they kids love them as an after school snack.
